Jan completed her BA and M.Ed. in Elementary Education at the University of Florida and went on to become a teacher in Seminole County. She is available to help families who are just starting out as well as more experienced families who need yearly evaluations.
Jan has worked with more than 100 families in the area and has written articles on the topic of homeschooling for local and national publications. After serving as a language arts teacher for the past two years, she has recently returned to being home with her children. In addition to homeschooling, she will be attending graduate school part-time at UCF. She hopes to return to teaching one day as a school counselor.
Jan recommends a balanced approach to homeschooling that provides opportunities for hands-on and "delight-driven" learning. The mother of two encourages parents to keep long-term goals for their children in mind when choosing curriculum. These goals might include a great sense of self and a lifelong love for learning in addition to a strong academic foundation.
She also reminds parents that there are no black/white answers when it comes to homeschooling. Every child is different. It is absolutely essential that parents remain flexible and open to new ideas throughout their homeschooling adventures. This will allow them to reflect and make changes as needed in order to meet the needs of their individual children.
Are you frustrated with your child's progress in school? Are you interested in homeschooling but feel that it isn't really an option for your family? Are you prepared to begin but need guidance as you choose a curriculum? Are you an experienced homeschooling parent who needs an evaluation or some other kind of assistance? Jan is based in Orlando, but she is able to consult with parents in other states via phone and email.
